On December 4th the minesweeper HMNZS South Sea sank in the Wellington Harbour after colliding with the inter-island steamer Wahine.

1942
Unity Theatre began in Wellington. The Unity Thearte was the breeding ground for New Zealand play-wright Bruce Mason.

1943
The bloodiest riot, the " Battle of Manners Street" occurred on April 3rd. It started when US servicemen refused to let Maori servicemen drink in the Wellington Allied Services club.
